Baik, langsung saja kita bahas. Tulisan ini juga merupakan salah satu karya sdri. Yasmin Nabila (salah satu mentee Program Youth Connection United Kingdom 2015). Selamat membaca.

HOW TO STUDY MASTER IN GREAT BRITAIN

Step One: Make a plan!

  1. Decide the subject you’ll be applying for
    • Please make sure that you’re able to meet the following requirements of the programme you are interested in before completing an application (the University’s entry requirements, the academic School’s entry requirements, and also financial requirements).
    • You could browse tons of information from the universities’ websites. Each one of them is offering helpful descriptions that could relate the subjects with your passion. You may also find subjects that relevant to your previous field of study.
  2. Decide in which universities you’ll be applying for
    • Make sure it offers the subject you’re keen to.
  3. Decide your departure time
    • It’s to double-check so your application documents are collected in time.
    • Please remember that start dates of programmes vary and can be at different times during the academic year, but most in Great Britain will be in September.
  4. Write the plan(s) down!
    • Write plan(s) for your reminder. Hang it/them around your room.

Step Two: Completing the documents!

Preparing for master study usually takes quite a long time because you need to collect several documents. Look carefully for the entry requirements on the universities’ websites. Ensure you have the qualities they are looking for and after you believe nothing is missing, send the applications.

  1. Prepare your English languange test results (IELTS/TOEFL)
    • Verify the effective date of the certificate and make sure your score has reached the minimum requirements.
  2. Prepare your university transcripts and degree certificates
    • Don’t forget to write it in English.
  3. Prepare your personal statement
    • Give yourself time to write it as best as you can. After you’re done, ask your friends’ opinion.
  4. Prepare academic references
    • Usually from your previous lecturers/professors.
  5. Other additional documents to support your application

Step Three: Declare your plan!

Tell your families and friend that you’re applying for a master study abroad. Instead of feeling uneasy because of the wait for the answer, you can get emotional support and you will not feel so alone. You can also receive a lot of prayers from all of them.

Step Four: Introduce yourself to the campus!

The selection process for a master program tends to be personal. If you’ve never made any contact with universities’ admission/lecturers before, there is a chance you may not make it.

  1. Introduce yourself
    • Let them know more about you and your interests to study in the university by sending your personal statement through the university’ mail.
  2. Ask for helpful tips
    • To position yourself ahead the others, ask for a permission to talk about your application documents and find out whether yours already meet the standards.
  3. Stay connected
    • For a strong impression, you may also communite with the universities through the phone call.
    • Don’t worry about the bills, there are Skype or InternetCalls that allow you to phone anywhere with affordable prices.
    • Prepare yourself for the conversation so you could talk about your interests in a short time. This phone call will certainly show the universities how serious you are.
  4. Get special oversight from the university
    • Abroad universities usually ask for reference letter, essay and personal statement which weigh more compared to your CV and academic records. This is the toughest job in application because there’s no specific hint about how should we write them.
    • If you have a special oversight directly from the universities, we could collect high quality documents far above the other applicants.

Step Five: Find other tips!

  1. Get in touch with alumni or current Indonesian students
    • You may get useful tips. Always ask everything you need.
  2. Feel free to visit related education centre
    • IBEC (Indonesia Britain Education Centre) or IDP Education headquarter can be your destination. It’s ready to provide helpful information about how to contact the campus or other things you’re wondering.

Step Six: Never stop trying!

Do the best and always be prepared for the worst. Don’t let failures stop you from studying in Great Britain. Keep trying and have faith in yourself.
